EATING HEALTHY IN HYPOTHYROIDISM

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone.

Signs and symptoms

The symptoms of hypothyroidism depend on the severity of the condition. Problems tend to develop slowly, often over several years.Hypothyroidism symptoms may include:

  • Tiredness
  • More sensitivity to cold
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Puffy face
  • Hoarse voice
  • Coarse hair and skin
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
  • Menstrual cycles that are heavier than usual or irregular
  • Thinning hair
  • Slowed heart rate, also called bradycardia
  • Depression
  • Memory problems

Some diet and lifestyle changes that you need to make that will help you live healthy.

  • Lose Excess weight with diet and regular exercise.
  • Eat small frequent meals, i.e. 5-6 small meals a day i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner , mid morning and evening snack.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables as snack option.
  • Omega 3 Supplement is essential to increase thyroid hormone level. Some foods which are rich in omega 3 which can be included in the diet are flaxseed, walnut, fenugreek seeds and mustard seeds.
  • Reduce sodium in diet. Avoid pickles, pappad and chutneys. Avoid adding raw salt on salad and fruits.
  • Prefer to use iodized salt.
  • Organic (vegetables and non-vegetarian) products should be selected.
  • Get plenty of rest, practice mindful eating.
  • Vitamin D deficiency is very common in hypothyroid patients and you may require supplementation. Mushrooms and eggs can also be included in the diet to increase Vitamin D.
  • Increase water intake like green tea, black tea and turmeric water.
